Stay Safe Online
If you are worried about someone monitoring your online activity, there are steps you can take to increase your privacy and safety while browsing the internet.
However, it is important to remember that there is no guaranteed way to completely hide online activity. Some people causing harm may monitor phones, computers, tablets, emails, social media accounts, or internet history. You should only take steps that feel safe and appropriate for your situation.
Using Private or Incognito Browsing
Most internet browsers offer a “Private” or “Incognito” mode. This helps prevent your browsing history, cookies, and temporary files from being saved on your device after you close the window.
You can usually open a private browsing window by:
- Chrome: Menu (three dots) → “New Incognito Window”
- Firefox: Menu → “New Private Window”
- Microsoft Edge: Menu (three dots) → “New InPrivate Window”
- Safari: File → “New Private Window”
Deleting Browsing History
If it feels safe to do so, you may wish to delete browsing history relating to websites you have visited. Some browsers allow you to:
- delete individual websites from your history
- clear history from a specific time period
- or delete all browsing data
However, for some people, suddenly deleting all browsing history may itself raise concerns or increase risk. You know your situation best.
Using Another Device
If possible, the safest option may be to use a device that the person causing harm cannot access, such as:
- a trusted friend or family member’s device
- a library computer
- a work or school computer
- or another public device.
Quick Exit Button
The “Leave Now” button on our website will quickly redirect you away from the site. However, it may still be possible for someone to see that you visited the Shetland Women’s Aid website through browser history or other monitoring tools.
